The main issue created by the *Exposed Node* problem is that significant delays are introduced since some nodes are prevented from sending traffic to other nodes because of an active transmitter farther down the path. Notice that **D** could send traffic without interfering with the conversation between **A** and **B** because **D** is not within radio range of either node.
